If you are buying clones, its best to examine them very carefully,, because not all clones are equal..... there are good quality ones out there.

thats what i keep hearing and lou vouches for them, but how do you know which are acceptable?
i took a leap and bought one around 12 bucks, actually it came in a set with a fake swashdrive for $25. i opened the package and automatically asked for a return, i didn't wanna bother because it seemed like a joke. they refunded my money and didn't even ask that i ship it back. it was a us seller. this tells me the price of these things is close to the price of return shipping.

i'm gonna use a rotary from now on, ever since i tried a storm a250 and i really liked it so much more than coil. the stupid thing crapped out in the middle of the first tattoo, motor problem. since then i've been stuck because i been messing with stupid clones and the things wrong with them are ridiculous.

it would be good to know which are okay, or the signs that i should look for. maybe looks are decieving and they work good even if everything about them indicates poor quality? i see a cam with casting marks and misaligned tube, needle tensioner, abar, etc.

could use some info on how to get my hands on a decent clone.

What I have noticed is that when the chinks first clone a new style of machine the quality seems OK, but as other companies start to make them the quality goes down...... stay away from the extremely shiny ones, they seem to be made from some horrible zinc alloy and plated,,and the quality is crap,,,, also the thumb wheel and damping adjusters are metal, the plastic ones seem better.... loom for the way the con rod is fastened to the cam, and the cam to the motor,,, are they pressed on, which is not good or have they gone to the effort and attached them using tiny grub screws and e-clips which mean more work for the manufacturers and means better quality,, just look at the overall appearance,, does it look if decent quality?. This in no way means it will work OK but in my experience I have bought several and they worked just fine and lasted well too.

is price an indicator of usability? like the $10 vs. $40. or is it more just a random thing

well thats good to hear that plastic is better than metal, cuz that what mine are. everything seems cockeyed and out of spec tho.

they have clones for up to $100 claiming swiss motors

Price isn't always an indicator nor is the damping adjustment being plastic, I'm just going by what I know from experience with the dragonfly clones.

DONT GO FOR THE PRICY ONES !!! They are jus the same if not worse than the cheap ones.... Most of them atleast... If you buy china replicas... i say stay in the 10-30$ range... And stay away from the complicated shit (like dragonflyes, stigmas, and all that) the simpler the system... the better the machine... (bishop, direct drives, and simple things)
There was one stigma prodigy replica that i didnt dislike, the plastic inside was white like the original one... so theres one option...with dragonfly is hard to find a good one ... since there are so many replicas... maybe the most replicated machine !!!
